Where solar fits
The same physics, different places. Sunlight lands on everything; what changes from a roof to a car park to a church hall is what is underneath the panels, who owns it, and which questions need a licensed answer before anyone commits.
Pitched roofs
The ordinary case, and the most economical one: the roof is already there, already tilted, and already pointed somewhere. Panels sit flush on rails bolted through to the rafters, with each penetration flashed and sealed the way vents and skylights already are.
In this region a south-facing pitch does best, east and west give up something, and north gives up more — but a great many roofs that are not textbook still produce usefully. Shade across the middle of the day is the one thing that genuinely rules a surface out.
Worth knowing: A system runs 25 to 30 years. If the roof under it has only a few years left, deal with the roof first.
Ask the professional: Whether your particular roof, rafters, and electrical panel can take an array is a licensed judgment, not something a web page or a neighbour with a card stand can tell you.
Ground mounts
A frame on clear land beside the house, which can be aimed and tilted exactly rather than inheriting whatever the roof happens to do. Where there is room, a ground mount often out-produces a poor roof, and it is far easier to reach for cleaning or repair.
Variants range from fixed frames on posts to pole mounts and motorised trackers that follow the sun through the day. Trackers add moving parts and cost; whether they earn it depends on the site.
Worth knowing: Tall grass and snow are the maintenance items nobody mentions. Plan for a mower to get round it.
Ask the professional: Trenching, setback rules and the distance to your service panel all shape what is sensible on a given plot.
Driveway carports
Homes that need more panels than the roof can hold often add a carport: it gives the aiming freedom of a ground mount and shelters whatever is parked underneath. The structure is the cost — you are building a small roof to put panels on.
It pairs naturally with an electric car, since the array sits directly above where the car charges.
Worth knowing: A carport is a structure in its own right, so it usually needs its own permit alongside the electrical one.
Charging an electric car
A home charger is another load on the house, and daytime charging is the cleanest possible use of your own production. Chargers differ in speed and in the supply voltage they need, and some inverters integrate vehicle charging more neatly than others.
If a car is in your plans, say so before the system is designed rather than after — it changes the size, and possibly the inverter.
Worth knowing: Owners of electric cars rarely charge in public; almost all of it happens at home overnight, which is exactly when the panels are idle. Storage or net-metering credit is what bridges that gap.
Flat roofs
Retail units, warehouses and multi-family buildings tend to have large, unshaded, flat roofs — some of the best solar real estate in a built-up area, and usually sitting empty. Panels go on tilted racking, often ballasted rather than bolted, so the membrane is not penetrated.
White or pale roofing reflects light back up, which is where bifacial panels — collecting on both faces — actually make sense.
Worth knowing: The roof membrane's remaining life and its load rating matter more here than orientation does.
Ask the professional: Structural capacity, wind uplift on ballasted racking, and roofing warranties are all engineering questions for the partner and the building's own roofer.
Parking lots
Acres of asphalt that bake all day and sit lit all night. Solar canopies over parking turn that into shade that generates, and the cars underneath stay cooler. Covered parking has been the obvious answer for years and is still uncommon in this part of the country.
That gap is what the #LotsOfSolar campaign is about: awareness that these spaces exist and could be working. It is a rallying point for people who rent, or whose own roof will not work, and who still want solar to happen where they live.
Worth knowing: Canopy projects are commercial-scale, and the owner of the lot is the only person who can start one. Awareness is the part anyone can contribute.
Churches and community buildings
Some of the best opportunities for larger projects sit on the pillars of a community. Places of worship have grown to stay inclusive, which tends to mean large roofs, large halls, and buildings that run quietly most of the week.
The hesitation is often aesthetic. It rarely survives a look at what a well-placed array does for a building that has to be heated, cooled and lit for decades to come.
Worth knowing: A congregation is an organisation, not a household — ownership, financing and who signs are settled differently, and it is worth having that conversation early.
Farms and rural properties
Space is rarely the constraint out of town; distance is. A long run from an array to the service panel costs money in cable and in losses, and the nearest grid connection may be a long way from the best patch of ground.
On the other hand, barns and outbuildings offer roofs that nobody minds the look of, and agricultural loads — pumps, cold storage, workshops — often run in daylight.
Worth knowing: Where running a grid connection to a remote building would be expensive, a small stand-alone system with storage can be the cheaper option.
Off-grid
Whether it is a personal mission or a geographic necessity, living without a utility connection is more reachable than it was: battery storage has come down into range, and the equipment for a serious home or workshop with no grid at all is mainstream now.
The trade is that you carry every dark night and every run of bad weather yourself. That means considerably more storage than a grid-tied system ever needs, and usually a generator for the worst stretches.
Worth knowing: For most connected homes this is a lifestyle decision rather than a financial one. A grid-tied system with a battery gets most of the resilience for a fraction of the storage.
RVs, boats and camping
Portable and vehicle-mounted panels have pushed reliable power into places with no infrastructure at all. Early products were rough; what is available now is the result of decades of trial and error, and it keeps improving.
It is a different discipline from a house system — small, DC-heavy, storage-first — and the sizing rules of thumb on this site do not apply.
Worth knowing: This is outside what our installation partner does. We mention it because people ask, not because we can introduce you to anyone for it.
When the look comes first
Panels today come with all-black frames and low-profile mounting, and building-integrated photovoltaics — cells in roof tiles, in glazing, in facade panels — put the generation inside the structure rather than on it.
Integrated products cost more per watt and are newer, so warranties and installer experience are thinner than for a conventional array. For a lot of homes the honest answer is that a modern all-black array, well laid out, is already unobtrusive.
Worth knowing: Ask to see a completed installation of any integrated product before choosing it. Renderings flatter.
Community solar and virtual net metering
For renters and for anyone whose roof will not work: you subscribe to a share of a larger array somewhere else, and the credit for its production lands on your own bill. No roof, no ownership, no installation, and it can move with you within the program area.
Virtual net metering is the policy that makes this possible — production in one place credited to a meter in another. It is at different stages across DC, Maryland and Virginia, and the programs change.
Worth knowing: Read the subscription terms as carefully as you would a lease: how the credit is calculated, what it costs to leave, and what happens if you move out of the area.
